Gormanston is understood to have been built during the mid-1900s with later additions, and its design has a strong Georgian influence with an imposing main elevation.
The house provides well-arranged and elegantly proportioned accommodation with some interesting architectural features. The accommodation is arranged over three floors, and has been sympathetically enlarged and improved by the current owners. From the covered entrance porch a wide part glazed front door leads through into the reception hall, which runs the depth of the house, with an elegant turned staircase to one side. To one end of the reception hall, glazed doors lead out onto a wide York stone terrace. Features of note include a beautifully appointed kitchen/breakfast room with a limestone floor. The kitchen has been fitted with an extensive range of white fronted units with Silestone polished work surfaces and incorporates a four oven Aga. Other features include large sash windows, high ceilings, a parquet floor in the study, attractive open fireplaces in both the drawing room and study, wooden panelling in the drawing room, panelled doors and all four reception rooms are double aspect. The well-arranged ground floor accommodation is ideally arranged for formal and informal entertaining, and is complemented over the first and second floors by six bedrooms, three bathrooms and a shower room, all of which are fitted well-appointed white suites.
Situation
Gormanston lies in a secluded position, away from main roads, approximately 0.5 mile to the north west of Uckfield. The town of Uckfield provides an extensive range of local shopping facilities, including a Waitrose supermarket, together with schools and a mainline station to London.
The regional centres in the area, Lewes and Haywards Heath are approximately 9 and 11 miles respectively. From Lewes, there is a mainline train service to London Bridge/Victoria in about an hour, whilst there is a similar service from Haywards Heath to London in about 47 minutes.
Outside
The property is approached from Snatts Road, through a set of wrought iron entrance gates set between two sandstone piers, from which a sweeping circular driveway leads up to the front of the house and a wide parking area. To the front of the house there is a large lawn which is bordered by mature trees and banks of rhododendrons.
Immediately to the rear and western side of the property is an extensive paved terrace which runs the length of the house boarded by balustrading. From the terrace formal steps lead down to an attractive sunken garden, beyond which is a pretty woodland dell, which is under planted with a mass of primroses and bluebells.
To the southern side of the house a part walled garden with a heated covered swimming pool, adjacent to which is a brick outbuilding housing a plant room, changing room and shower/w.c. To the northern side of the house is a substantial weatherboard and tile outbuilding/barn - 69' x 58' (21m x 17.6m) with double doors to either end. Beyond this building, is a brick and tile open fronted garage, a brick and tile former stables and a greenhouse (in need of repair). The gardens and grounds at Gormanston surround the property and provide an attractive and secluded setting for the property.
