Description
An important Grade II* listed moated country house set in in beautiful gardens with outbuildings. Two lodges available by separate negotiation.
Playford Hall is a magnificent Grade II* Listed country house dating back to the late 16th Century, when it was built by the High Sheriff of Suffolk, Sir Anthony Felton. Originally an E-plan house, Playford Hall was altered in the 18th and 19th Centuries to form the layout that exists today.
Playford Hall benefits from beautifully proportioned rooms arranged over four floors. Many of the rooms have wonderful views of the moat and surrounding gardens. Of particular note are the drawing room and dining room with magnificent fireplaces. The kitchen has a good range of fitted wall and floor units and an Aga.
From the entrance hall, the staircase rises to the first floor where there are two large bedroom suites with dressing room and bathroom, three further bedrooms and two bathrooms. There are a further four bedrooms and two bathrooms on the second floor, as well as the playroom.
Situation
Playford Hall is situated on the edge of the much favoured village of Playford located between Ipswich and Woodbridge, a popular market town of considerable character with an excellent array of specialist independant shops, restaurants, schools, swimming pool, cinema and library as well as a railway station to London Liverpool Street.
Ipswich has a more comprehensive range of shopping amenities, schools and a mainline railway service to London Liverpool Street Station taking approximately 65 minutes. There is easy access to the A12 and A14 trunk roads giving access to London and the M25 as well as the Midlands and the national motorway network.
The surrounding area provides the opportunity to particpate in major sports with golf courses at Woodbridge, Aldeburgh, Thorpeness and Melton. Fishing, sailing and other water sports are popular on the neaby Suffolk Heritage Coastline, particularly on the estuaries of the Deben, Alde and Orwell. In addition, Snape Maltings Concert, which is home to the internationally eminent Aldeburgh Festival, is a further attraction to the location.
Outside
Playford Hall is approached through a striking gated entrance and along a driveway through parkland leading to a parking area to the south side of the house. A beautiful original footbridge over the moat serves as access to the gravel courtyard to the front of the property. The magnificent gardens and grounds surround the house and include attractive and beautifully presented walled and terraced gardens planted with philadelphus, hebe, lilac and roses and vegetable and herb gardens.
Situated to the south-west of the house is the attractive Coach House, which offers extensive ancillary space, including a cart lodge, tack room, large barn and store, with further store rooms on the first floor. To the rear of the building is an outside door leading into the annexe. Whilst currently used as further storage, it could easily act as accommodation for a staff member or relative.
Directions
From London, take the A12 until meeting the A14 roundabout outside Ipswich. At this roundabout, turn right onto the A14 and proceed east. Stay on the A14, crossing over the Orwell Bridge and turn off at junction 58 signposted A12/Lowestoft/Woodbridge. Continue on the dual carriageway and at the fourth roundabout, turn left onto the A1214 towards Ipswich. After approximately quarter of a mile, turn right onto Hall Road, signposted Bealings. At the first crossroads, turn left onto Playford Road and after approximately 1 mile turn right, signposted Playford. The gates to Playford Hall are on the left hand side beside a red brick lodge approximately 200 yards past the 30 mph and village sign for Playford.
