Benarth Hall is an exceptional Georgian country house, beautifully restored by the present owners with great attention to historic detail. Situated in a south facing elevated setting in landscaped gardens and grounds the property has spectacular panoramic views over the Conwy Estuary.
The property has a fascinating history dating from c.1790 and probably designed by the architect Samuel Wyatt for Samuel Price of Lincoln's Inn. In the early 1800's it was let as a summer retreat to the renowned collector and connoisseur George Beaumont who co-founded the National Gallery and whose close friend William Wordsworth visited the property.
Benarth Hall was restored and remodelled as an Italianate villa in the early 20th Century but later fell into disrepair before being painstakingly restored by the present owners.
CADW, The Historic Buildings Council for Wales have described Benarth as having been '…restored in an exemplary manner…' and the property is now a most elegant example of neo-classical architecture and design whilst providing a comfortable family home.
The interiors include a number of beautiful period details including both Georgian and Arts and Crafts fireplaces, several attractive decorated plaster ceilings and mouldings and period Italian mosaic tiling.
Outside
The property is approached via a long private drive winding through attractive rhododendron studded woodland alongside the river from Conwy. The drive sweeps up to a gravel parking area in front of the house and continues through the grounds to a double garage and a range of useful outbuildings.
Much of the ornamental grounds are Grade II listed and include formal gardens and lawns to the south and west of the property with a raised terrace adjacent to the house. At the edge of the upper lawn is an elegant semi-circular balustraded viewing platform which reflects the curved projection of the colonnade at the front of the hall. At the eastern side of the garden there is a charming circular summer house on a paved plinth providing a beautiful outside entertaining area.
Steps lead down from the lawns to access the Mediterranean garden below. Laid out in a series of pretty rockeries, with steps between different levels and a pond , it includes a variety of Mediterranean and alpine plants. The rose garden is found to the westerly aspect of the property and has a charming period sundial and well-stocked mature beds. Further steps lead down to the woodland garden which features meandering paths leading to a small pond. This area is planted with a wide range of mature and semi mature trees and shrubs including Japanese Maple, Davidii, Magnolia, Cherry, Scot's pine as well as a variety of spectacular azaleas and rhododendrons. The under planting which includes ferns, snowdrops, cyclamen, bluebells, foxgloves and several other species creates a wonderful year round spectacle.
The grounds extending further south feature more mature rhododendrons and allow pleasant views towards the river and hills beyond. Mature woodland extends to the north and west of the property and much of it is designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest due to its interesting flora and fauna. Within the wooded grounds there is a late 18th Century domed ice house.
